First grade students went on a field trip to the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Saybrook on April 28th, as part of an arts based collaborative. Located on the banks of the Lieutenant River, the students were entertained by their tour guide as they perused the Griswold homestead and adjacent gallery. The students learned about Ms. Griswold and all of the artists that she opened her home to as they passed through Connecticut. Students were asked questions about the history of CT and the artwork that adorned the walls. After their museum tour concluded, they were put into an oversized art shirt, given a pail of water and brushes, and a canvas for painting. They walked down to the river bank so that they could paint their own landscape with the Lieutenant River as inspiration. It was a beautiful day filled with CT history and the creative energy of first graders who were ready to explore the same landscape that artists did many years ago.
